Good morning,

The Bible is series continues. This week the Bible is to be obeyed.

We have seen that the Bible God’s word. Last week we determined that the Bible is practical. The next logical step is to obey the Bible. God has given us a free will. We may choose to obey or disobey God’s commands, guidance, and will for our lives.

Come with me on a journey to explore what the Bible says. The Scriptures are always helpful, encouraging, and challenging. That’s how we grow in our relationship with God!

The Bible is to be obeyed

BENEFITS OF OBEDIENCE

3. FORGIVENESS

Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

We are forgiven. When Jesus Christ went to the cross, shed His blood for our sin, rose the third day, and forty days later, ascended back to heaven, we were forgiven. Jesus paid our sin debt with His blood.

4.  LOVE

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

We are loved. The very God of creation loves us. The God who spoke all things into exitance loves us. The God who is all knowing, ever present, and all powerful loves us. That is amazing!

5.  WISDOM

Ephesians 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

We are wise. Not wise guys, but wise. When we became believers in Christ, the Holy Spirit resides in us. The third person of the trinity indwells each believer.

These benefits are a result of making a decision to follow what the Bible says.

The Bible is to be obeyed

CHOOSE TO OBEY

But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. (1 John 2:5)

If ye love me, keep my commandments. (John 14:15)

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. (John 14:21)

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; ³²And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:31-32)

I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments. (Psalm 119:60)

And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws. (Genesis 26:4-5)

And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. (Acts 2:42)

BLESSING AND CURSING

A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day:²⁸ And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known. (Deuteronomy 11:27-28)

COMMANDS TO OBEY

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. (James 1:22)

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. (Joshua 1:8)

Therefore shall ye keep my commandments, and do them: I am the Lord. (Leviticus 22:31)

Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee. (Deuteronomy 6:17)

Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him. (Deuteronomy 8:6)

BENEFITS OF OBEDIENCE

1 Chronicles 29:11 Thine, O LORD is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.

7. WALK WITH THE LORD

Colossians 1:10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

Colossians 2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:

8. HEAVEN

John 14:2-3 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Revelation 21:1-4, 6, 8 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

The most important is our salvation. We can make the choice to be saved and go to heaven, or choose not to be saved and go to hell. It is exclusively our choice.

However, If we choose salvation, that also gives us eternal life. We will be with God forever. There are other benefits we will looking at this week. These are the blessings rather than the curses.

The choices we make today, last for eternity.

Obedience is a choice. No one can make you obey. The words whosoever, if, He that, and I, make it clear that a choice had to be made. The last two verses show a choice was made and the results.

A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day:²⁸ And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known. (Deuteronomy 11:27-28)

Although this was written to Israel, it is applicable to us today. If we obey God, we will be blessed, and if we disobey God we will be cursed. That just means the opposite of a blessing.

It is God’s desire that we obey His word. All of it. All the time. The question for us is why we don’t. Many times, we know what is right, but choose to go counter to what God’s word says. Then we wonder why God chastens us. This is called sin and must be dealt with.

We must repent and ask God’s forgiveness. The Bible states, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

Choose to obey God!

Second Timothy 3:16-17 tells us that the scriptures are profitable (practical) for doctrine, reproof, correction and training in righteousness. This week we will look at these four areas as it relates to the Bible is practical.

The Bible is a practical book. It tells us about God’s creation, man’s sin, the flood, what caused the current conflict in the middle east, the creation and history of Israel. And that is just the books of Genesis and Exodus. It tells us that we are sinners in need of a Savior. Jesus came to pay our sin debt by becoming sin for us. He shed His precious, holy, sinless blood for our sins. Died, was buried, and rose the third day. It tells us of the struggles between good and evil. It tells us of heaven and hell, and how we can go to either.

It also tells us how to live in a world opposed to God and His Son Jesus Christ. This study is not all inclusive. We will see more during the coming weeks.

The Bible is Practical

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. (2 Timothy3:16-17)

Instruction in righteousness

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. (James 1:22-25)

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.² And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:1-2)

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (Matthew 6:33)

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. (Ephesians 5:15-16)

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24)

He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honor. (Proverbs 21:21)

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.⁵ Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.⁶ Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.⁷ And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:4-7)

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. (Hebrews 12:14)

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Philippians 4:8)

God wants us to live lives of righteousness. So, He gives us instructions on what to do. If we choose to follow God’s advice, we will be living righteously.

Read the Scriptures above. Ask, am I doing these things? Do I desire to do these things?

Our thoughts are so easily distracted from the things of God. Philippians 4:8 is a practical lesson on keeping minds focused on God.

The Bible is Practical

Correction

Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savor. (Ephesians 5:1-2)

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. (Psalm 37:7)

In that I command thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it. (Deuteronomy 30:16)

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (James 4:7)

He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. (Proverbs 13:3)

Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. (Psalm 37:5-6)

Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.¹⁰ Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another;¹¹ Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;¹² Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;¹³ Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.¹⁴ Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. ¹⁵ Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.¹⁶ Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.¹⁷ Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.¹⁸ If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.¹⁹ Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.²⁰ Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.²¹ Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:9-21

Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (Ephesians 6:11)

If we have chosen to disobey God’s commandments, we must repent. Agree with God that we have sinned, admit guilt, then turn away from that sin and move on.

God gives us advice on how to stay out of sin. They require action on the part of the believer.

Follow God, walk in love, rest in the Lord, wait patiently on Him, walk in His ways, keep His commandments, submit yourself to God, control our speech, commit our ways to Him, trust in Him, cleave to what is good, honor one another, and put on the whole armor of God.

These are practical actions. This is a Godly lifestyle. It is one that puts God first.

The Bible is Practical

Doctrine

For we walk by faith, not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7)

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-2)

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?³⁶ As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.³⁷ Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.³⁸ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,³⁹ Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:35-39)

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:1-4

Reproof 

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (1 John 2:15)
But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. (Ephesians 5:3-5)

Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life. (Philippians 2:14-16a)

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. (1 Peter 3:10-11)

See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.¹⁶ Rejoice evermore.¹⁷ Pray without ceasing.¹⁸ In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.¹⁹ Quench not the Spirit.²⁰ Despise not prophesyings.²¹ Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.²² Abstain from all appearance of evil.²³ And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.²⁴ Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.²⁵ Brethren, pray for us.²⁶ Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.²⁷ I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.²⁸ The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. (1 Thessalonians 5:15-28)

Correction

Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (Ephesians 6:11)

Instruction in righteousness

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. (James 1:22-25)

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.² And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:1-2)

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (Matthew 6:33)

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. (Ephesians 5:15-16)

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24)

He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honor. (Proverbs 21:21)

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.⁵ Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.⁶ Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.⁷ And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. (Hebrews 12:14)

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Philippians 4:8)

Second Timothy 3:16-17 tells us that the scriptures are profitable (practical) for doctrine, reproof, correction and training in righteousness. This week we will look at these four areas as it relates to the Bible is practical.

The Bible is a practical book. It tells us about God’s creation, man’s sin, the flood, what caused the current conflict in the middle east, the creation and history of Israel. And that is just the books of Genesis and Exodus. It tells us that we are sinners in need of a Savior. Jesus came to pay our sin debt by becoming sin for us. He shed His precious, holy, sinless blood for our sins. Died, was buried, and rose the third day. It tells us of the struggles between good and evil. It tells us of heaven and hell, and how we can go to either.

It also tells us how to live in a world opposed to God and His Son Jesus Christ. This study is not all inclusive. We will see more during the coming weeks.

Come with me on a journey to explore what the Bible says. The Scriptures are always helpful, encouraging, and challenging. That’s how we grow in our relationship with God!

The Bible is Practical

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. (2 Timothy3:16-17)

Reproof 

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (1 John 2:15)

But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. (Ephesians 5:3-5)

Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life. (Philippians 2:14-16a)

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. (1 Peter 3:10-11)

See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.¹⁶ Rejoice evermore.¹⁷ Pray without ceasing.¹⁸ In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.¹⁹ Quench not the Spirit.²⁰ Despise not prophesyings.²¹ Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.²² Abstain from all appearance of evil.²³ And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.²⁴ Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.²⁵ Brethren, pray for us.²⁶ Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.²⁷ I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.²⁸ The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. What does reproof mean? What not to do or what one has done wrong.

God gives us warnings on what not to do. Do not love the world. Do not speak of or commit evil acts. Do not murmur. Do not render evil for evil.

These are practical applications from the Bible.

The Bible is Practical

Doctrine

For we walk by faith, not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7)

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-2)

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?³⁶ As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.³⁷ Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.³⁸ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,³⁹ Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:35-39)

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:1-4

What is doctrine? Teaching. God wants us to know what is important for us to be able to live in this sin sick world.

The verses above give us guidelines on what to do and know.

We must live by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and what He did for us on the cross at Calvary. Believers in Christ or no longer condemned, but are conquerors. Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. Our focus must always be upward.

This week we begin a month-long study of the Bible. The Bible is… series. The Bible is God’s word, is practical, is to be obeyed, is about Israel, and is about Jesus and salvation.

Personally, my life has been influenced greatly by the Bible. Jesus Christ is my foundation and God’s word is my direction. Everything I am today is because God revealed His word to me. He taught me how to live in this ungodly world. He showed me that victory in the Christian life is through Him. And all this is revealed in the Bible.

The Bible is the Word of God

“The B I B L E, now that’s the book for me. I stand alone on the Word of God. The B I B L E, Bible.”

The power of the Bible

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? Jeremiah 23:29

Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Proverbs 30:5

The word of God is powerful, is like a fire, but is a shield to those who trust it. The Bible is God’s way of convicting us of sin, dealing with that sin, challenging us, and encouraging us. God wants the best for us.

Sometimes though, we do not want the best for us. He is always willing to take us back once we choose to repent.

The response to the Bible

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16

Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. John 6:68

When we choose to walk with God, we will have deep desire to share what we know with others. Since we have the mind of God, His directions to live life, we have much to share with others.

Conclusion

The Bible was with God from the beginning

The Bible is God’s authority on what His people are to do

The Bible was given to everyone by God

The Bible is powerful

The Bible demands a response
