Daily Devotion 2 October 2026 Luke 8:11-12 We will always find him in church!

Good morning,

We shall always find him at church!

(J.C. Ryle, “The Gospel of Luke” 1858)

(Be sure to LISTEN to the Audio, as you READ the text below.)

Luke 8:11-12, “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the Word of God. Those along the wayside are the ones who hear; and then the devil comes and takes away the Word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.”

The first caution that we learn from the parable of the sower, is to beware of the devil when we hear the Word. Our Lord tells us that the hearts of some hearers are like “the wayside.” The seed of the Gospel is plucked away from them by the devil almost as soon as it is sown. It does not sink down into their consciences. It does not make the least impression on their minds.

That malicious devil is unwearied in his efforts to harm us. He is ever watching for our halting, and seeking occasion to destroy our souls. But nowhere perhaps is the devil so active, as in a congregation of Gospel-hearers! Nowhere does he labor so hard to stop the progress of that which is good, and to prevent men and women being saved. From him, come . . .
  wandering thoughts, and roving imaginations;
  listless minds, and dull memories;
  sleepy eyes, and fidgety nerves;
  weary ears, and distracted attention.
In all these things, Satan has a great hand.

People wonder where they come from, and marvel how it is that they find sermons so dull, and remember them so badly! They forget the parable of the sower. They forget the devil.

Let us take heed that we are not wayside hearers. Let us beware of the devil. We shall always find him at church! Let us remember this, and be upon our guard. Heat and cold, and rain and snow–are often dreaded by church-goers, and alleged as reasons for not going to church. But there is one enemy whom they ought to fear more than all these things together; that enemy is the devil!

Daily Devotion 1 October 2026 Psalm 135:6 Natural disasters, calamities, and catastrophes

Good morning,

Natural disasters, calamities, and catastrophes

Charles Spurgeon, et al. [All Spurgeon material is in italics.]

(Be sure to LISTEN to the Audio, as you READ the text below.)

The Sovereign Hand

Psalm 135:6, “Whatever the Lord pleases, He does, in Heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.”

“All calamities are under the control of the Almighty; nothing happens apart from His decree, not even the fall of a sparrow. Providence is intricately interwoven with every event; even the sweeping of a storm across the sea is but a thread in the tapestry of His eternal design.”

No storm, earthquake, or loss occurs beyond God’s command. Providence directs every atom.

Sovereign Mercy in the Storm

Nahum 1:3, “The Lord has His way in the whirlwind and storm.”

“Brethren, storms are God’s chariots; He rides upon the wings of the wind.”

Every tempest is His servant. He rides upon what to us appears chaotic, accomplishing eternal purposes unseen to finite minds.

The Comfort of Divine Sovereignty

Romans 8:28, “We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

“There is no attribute of God more comforting to His children, than the doctrine of divine sovereignty.”

When adversity strikes, it comforts the heart to know that our pain is not purposeless. Our sovereign Lord uses all things for our good, and His glory.

The Storm’s Sermon

Psalm 107:25, “For He commanded and raised the stormy wind.”

“Brethren, every wind is a preacher, every tempest is a text. God commands them, and they obey.”

The natural world declares God’s glory (Psalm 19:1). Even disaster is a sermon on divine majesty and creature dependence.

The Ultimate Refuge

Proverbs 18:10, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower.”

“Those who trust in the Lord are safe, though the world collapses around them.”

Our security is not geographical or physical; it is theological. “Safe in Christ” means immunity to ultimate ruin.

God’s Hammer

Isaiah 1:25, “I will thoroughly purge away your dross and remove all your impurities.”

“Affliction is no thunderbolt to crush us, but a gentle hammer to shape us for eternity.”

Every trial molds believers for Heaven. Sanctification is the divine art of hammering hardened hearts into Christ-likeness.

Providence versus Mother-nature

Amos 3:6, “Does disaster come to a city, unless the Lord has done it?”

“Disaster is not by chance; it is the deliberate voice of Providence. If God is sovereign over His creation, then no flood, no fire, no famine, nor plague can loosen one stone of His purpose.”

“Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns!” Revelation 19:6
