This week we will enjoy chapters 9-12 of Pilgrim’s Progress.

Christian resumes his journey after recovering the scroll he had lost in the arbor on the Hill Difficulty. The lessons learned from his carelessness have made him more watchful and determined.
As he proceeds, he encounters two men named Timorous and Mistrust. These travelers are moving in the opposite direction, away from the Celestial City. Their fearful appearance immediately attracts Christian’s attention. Christian asks them why they are retreating from the pilgrimage. They explain that they had been traveling toward the Celestial City but became terrified by dangers ahead. In particular, they report seeing lions positioned near the path before them. Convinced that the danger is too great, they have decided to abandon the journey altogether. Their fears have overcome their desire to continue toward their destination.
Christian listens carefully to their warning and considers the seriousness of what they have said. He recognizes that the threat may indeed be real. At the same time, he understands that turning back would lead only toward destruction. Christian reasons that although dangers may lie ahead, safety cannot be found by abandoning the King’s highway.
He remembers the blessings he has already received and the goal that still lies before him. Rather than following Timorous and Mistrust back toward the old life, he chooses to continue forward. His decision demonstrates growing faith and spiritual maturity.
The contrast between Christian and the two fearful travelers becomes increasingly clear. Timorous and Mistrust allow fear to control their actions, while Christian allows truth to govern his decisions.
